Background

Monica C. Sanchez is the managing partner of  Mitchell Sanchez Firm.  Ms. Sanchez was born in Panama, Republic of Panama on March 24, 1973. She is fluent in both English and Spanish.

Education

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in three years from Ohio University in 1994 with a double major in Economics and Political Science. She attended Loyola University School of Law from which she obtained her Juris Doctor degree in 1998. Monica obtained an L.L.M. (Master of Law) degree in International and Comparative Law in 2003, from Tulane University School of Law.

Courts Where Admitted to Practice

Ms. Sanchez is admitted to practice before the Louisiana Supreme Court, and all Louisiana State District and Appellate Courts. She is also admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of Louisiana and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

Areas of Practice

Ms. Sanchez has more than twelve years of experience practicing law in the area of personal injury, business law and a general practice. She has represented victims of automobile accidents, medical malpractice, products liability, premises liability and other forms of personal injuries. Ms. Sanchez was part of a trial team that obtained a $6 million verdict in 2004. 

Awards and Honors

Ms. Sanchez was recently named to the 2019 edition of Louisiana Super Lawyers in the area of Personal Injury. Only 5 percent of the attorneys in the State of Louisiana are named to the very prestigous list.

Ms. Sanchez is the recipient of the 2010 Hispanic National Bar Association’s Top Lawyers Under 40 Award.  This award was given to only 5 recipients nationwide.  According to the HNBA:

Through the Top Lawyers Under Forty Award, the HNBA celebrates and highlights younger HNBA  members who have demonstrated professional excellence, integrity, leadership and commitment to the Hispanic community.  HNBA members from all segments of the profession, including private practice, government, public interest, academia, and corporate legal departments, are eligible to receive the Award.
“The five (5) award recipients represent the best and brightest Hispanic attorneys in the country.  While the HNBA received nominations for many exceptionally qualified attorneys, the recipients of this award have distinguished themselves for their professional endeavors, through their commitment and involvement in the Hispanic community, all at a relatively early stage of their careers.”

Monica also recently received the 2010 Pro Bono Publico Award from the Louisiana State Bar Association.  This award is given to an outstanding attorney who has demonstrated dedication to the development and delivery of legal services to the poor through pro bono service.  Her pro bono service was in the Hispanic Community.

Ms. Sanchez has also twice won the prestigious  Leadership in Law Award recognizing the Top 50 Lawyers in New Orleans.  She was recently named as a 2010 recipient which is the second year in a row that she has been recognized for this award.  She also won it in 2009.  This award is given to the top 50 attorneys in New Orleans as judged by a panel of professionals at New Orleans City Business Magazine. 

Ms. Sanchez also received the 2009 Women of the Year Award.  The annual award honors women whose successes in business and contributions to the community have set the pace for the region’s future. The women selected are innovative leaders with outstanding energy, ideas, achievements and commitment to excellence in the New Orleans area. 

She has also been featured on the cover of El Tiempo magazine as one of the Top 5 Latina Entrepreneurs in the City of New Orleans. She was the only attorney among this group.   Monica was also the subject of a ten page expose in Vocero Magazine.  She has been a frequent guest speaker on Radio 1540 Tropical where she gives legal advice to callers.  Monica also regularly speaks at seminars attended by lawyers and judges.

Positions Held

Ms Sanchez is the President-Elect, and current Vice President of the Louisiana Hispanic Lawyers Association.  In 2010, Monica was unanimously elected to the Board of Directors for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana.  She is a frequent lecturer on legal topics and in September 2009 was invited to appear before the Louisiana Legislature to provide testimony on a recently passed bill relating to interpreters for legal cases.  She was featured in a story in The Baton Rouge Advocate relating to this testimony. In 2010, Ms Sanchez was appointed by Louisiana State Bar President Kim Boyle to serve on the Language Access Subcommittee, a joint subcommittee of the Louisiana Bar’s Right to Counsel and Access to Justice Committees.

Her Mission

Monica has dedicated her career to educating the Hispanic community to understand their rights in America.  Her goal is for all Hispanics to be educated about and trust the legal system. She wants to make justice available and accessible to everyone.
